FORT CAMPBELL, Kentucky - As the calendar approaches another holiday season, the U.S. Air Force Exchange wants to make sure its customers have the best experience possible, both in business and in the shopping experience. Currently, the main interchange at Fort Campbell is undergoing extensive renovations to realize this vision.

"Every area in the store will be changed, updated and renovated," said store manager Gina Woodruff. "Everything is being redone inside. We've got new carpet, new roof and new appliances. We've got new flooring too. It's a complete facelift."

The warehouse renovation program began about two years ago, with work officially starting on July 27. Barring any delays, the project is set to be completed on October 31.

"We love the look," Woodruff said. "Obviously the tile looks great, and the rug really brightens up the storefront. That's really important."

While excited about the store's beautiful upgrades, Woodruff said this is just a small sample of the changes customers can expect. One of the big changes that customers can expect is a remodel of all parts of the store, as well as a collection of new products.

"That includes all the bases with big stores like Japan," Woodruff said. "As our customers say, our category will be bigger than theirs. They shop there, so we'll take it to them."

As the fitment was done in parts, all products were available for customer replacement during the project. Products that are undergoing renovations will be moved to a designated "swing area" throughout the warehouse.

"Everything is still available," Woodruff said. "If they can't get it, they can ask someone else. But the customers have been great. They've been really understanding. They know when it's over, it's all worth it."

Woodruff said that while she knew the project would present some challenges, she appreciated the client's patience.

Kimberly Leipheimer, director of recruiting for the Air Force Exchange Service, said an AAFES recruit can take some of the stress off a spouse as she prepares for a permanent change of station or PCS transfer.

"The exchange offers two programs for employees who are moving their spouses under a PCS order," Leipheimer said. "Associate Degree Exchange Program and Spouse Continuity of Employment Program. For military spouses who are no longer employed by us, we also offer spousal preferences when enlisting."
