Glock 19 Holosun 507c - Red dot sights on handguns have become popular in the last few years. It is true that competitive bullseye and IPSC shooters have long used reflex sights. It wasn't until someone decided to put the Trijicon RMR on a Glock slide that people realized the potential of smaller, micro or collimator sights in defensive pistols.

I tried the Trijicon RMR on a Glock 17 platform in 2013 and it was great when it worked. But I ended up checking out three Trijicon RMR RM07 units (adjustable LEDs).

The first round lasted about a thousand rounds. Then on one trip to the shooting range, the front lens fell off the RMR and got lost in the snow. I replaced it with Brownells (100% lifetime satisfaction guarantee) and the second RM07 unit was dead on delivery. He did not want to turn on. Then I replaced it with a third one and it lasted about a year.

Over the course of the year, I've occasionally run into odd problems, especially when the RMR brightness has changed due to recoil. Sometimes it was really bright or very dim. Then about a year and a few thousand rounds later, the windage adjustment failed completely with the dot moving freely from left to right under the rear and not moving when adjusting the windage.

I ended up sending the RMR to Brownells with a letter explaining my problems and they refunded me.

Fast forward almost five years later. I found myself still wanting to try the Glock red dot again. My vision is the rare situation where I find it difficult to shoot sights because my eye can no longer change the focal plane on its own. I have my corrective lens to adjust my dominant eye at infinity, so red dot sights, reflex sights, and other optics are perfect for me.

As much as I wanted to use a pistol red dot sight again, I wasn't willing to risk another $550 on the Trijicon RMR, even though they are a new build (type 2). But then I switched to Holosun 507C.

The Holosun 507C (HS507C) has gained a good reputation because it is a collimator shaped like the Trijicon RMR. It is very similar to the RMR, meaning that the Holosun 507C will fit on any slide milled for the Trijicon RMR. Additionally, people who tried the Holosun 507C claimed that it actually resisted the recoil of the gun and seemed to be strong enough to withstand the pressures of the bolt recoil.

I started looking for it and the price is fair in the $300 price range, but the Holosun 507C has been so popular for the past few months that it's gone everywhere. Fortunately, I found out about the availability of the 507C at Kenzie's Optics and was able to get one.

Out of the box, the Holosun 507C looks quality even at a lower price compared to the Trijicon RMR.

It is machined from 7075 T6 aluminum and features a Picatinny rail mount that can be removed to reveal the RMR footprint, allowing direct mounting to any RMR compatible mount.

One notable difference between the HS507C and the Trijicon RMR is that the battery is not located at the bottom of the device. There is actually a cotton battery cap on the bottom to hold the battery in place. Please note that tools are required to remove this cover.

The HS507C uses a CR2032 battery. The 507C runs for 10 years (at power setting 6) on one battery. Like the Trijicon RMR, the HS507C must be unlocked to access the battery compartment. But the great thing about the HS507C is that there is also an integrated solar cell ("Solar Failsafe").

If there is enough sunlight, the solar cell actually powers the vision instead of the battery. When the solar cell does not receive enough light to power the optics, the 507C draws power from a CR2032 battery.

The HS507C also features several intelligent performance modes as part of the design. It can operate in automatic or manual mode, where "automatic mode" causes the spot brightness to automatically adjust to the prevailing light conditions, and "manual mode" sets the spot brightness to a level set by the operator.

There's also an auto-shutoff with a "Shake Awake" feature where it turns off after 10 minutes of inactivity (no movement). But if it detects movement, the optics will turn on again (for example, being hit when the gun is not in the holster).

While I personally didn't care for this feature, the HS507C has three different networks with Multi-Network System (M.R.S.):

The 32MOA wheel is similar to the EOTech wheel. I find the dash too messy for a pistol application and prefer the plain dot.

Note: IPX8 means the device is rated for immersion in water deeper than 1 meter, but "X" means no dust particle resistance test.

One Off Coating

It should be noted that this product is made in China because many people consider the place of production. Of course, this affects the final price, and the low price explains all the features on paper, but it does not necessarily affect the quality of the product. However, this should be considered when choosing an optic or other critical equipment.

I chose to buy a new slide that was already milled with an RMR slot and a Glock 19 Gen 3 internal slide from Brownells with an RMR slot. Rather than repeat with the Glock 17 platform I originally ran the RMR on a few years ago, this time I ran the red dot on the G19 platform, as this particular Gen 3 G19 is usually in my range.

The Brownells RMR slider retailed for over $160, so it seemed like a good buy. Aside from a small dent in the glass near the ejection port, the slide looked good.

I ordered all the OEM parts to build the breech, but ended up getting the firing pin assembly and firing pin safety from the G19 bolt I wanted to mount it on, as those parts came from the Haley Strategic Skimmer trigger kit.

I had a spare Ameriglo rear silencer height camera left over from my previous RMR design Glock 17, but needed another .315" height camera. I got one from Dawson Precision.

Installing the HS507C was simple. The Brownells RMR slide has posts that the sight screw holes go into, which is great for extra red dot sight support and requires the use of Brownells screws.

There is very little clearance to get the vertical angle to the bolts. Instead of using an allen wrench, I used a longer stroke T10 torx bit so I could use a torque limiter in pounds. I left with £15.

After running a few hundred rounds through this reconfigured Glock 19 Gen 3, I immediately made a few observations on the HS507C.

First, the greenish tint found in the Trijicon RMR lens is also present in the Holosun 507C. I haven't reviewed the RMR in a while and don't have a side by side to compare it to, but I think it's a bit oversaturated with the HS507C. For me, it's not a big deal.

Second, I noticed image distortion at the edges of the lens. Towards the edge of the lens, you can see that the image is slightly distorted, most likely due to the curvature of the lens. Again, I haven't used RMR in a long time, but I don't recall it being with RMR. As with the previous observation, this is not a problem. The image looks good for most parts of the lens.

The elevation and windage controls are very small and require a small flat driver. I don't actually carry a small flat tip screwdriver in my kit(s) and luckily I took my shooting box with me because the included tool has a flat tip for height and windage adjustment.

As for the clicks, there will be a sound with each click when tuning, but you should probably take off your hearing protection (or use electronics). I could feel the clicks, but I didn't trust it and preferred to listen for each click.
