SEOUL, July 5 () - US Air Force F-35A fighter jets arrived in South Korea on Tuesday for their first public visit since 2017, as allies and nuclear-armed North Korea engaged in increased weapons displays.

Joint military exercises had been publicly curtailed in recent years, first in 2018 as efforts to gain diplomatic cooperation with North Korea and later due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The aircraft, which was dispatched from Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, the United States Forces Korea (USFK) said in a statement.

The Defense Department's $773 billion budget request this week proposed buying dozens fewer F-35s than expected, a reduction that military officials said would focus on modernizing the fighter fleet.
That announcement coincided with Canada's announcement that it will buy 88 F-35s to replace its aging fighters, making Ottawa the third US ally or partner to sign on to buy the Joint -strike fighter in recent weeks.
The budget presented on Monday proposes to buy 61 F-35s - 33 F-35As for the Air Force and 28 F-35Cs and F-35Bs for the Navy and Marines - in the 2023 financial year starting October 1.
Those totals are less than the 85 jets approved by Congress in the 2022 budget and the 94 the Pentagon was expected to request for 2023.

The Navy's F-35 request "went down" from previous budget projections, "and it simply reflects the balance of this budget request when you look at our portfolios in shipbuilding and increased [research and development] while focusing on capabilities ,” he said. The Pentagon has temporarily suspended deliveries of F-35 fighter jets to the military and international customers after Lockheed Martin discovered that a metal component used in the plane's engine came from China, according to the Pentagon.
