Bfa Military - Adapter Blank or Attachment Blank (BFA), sometimes called Adapter Blank or Accessory Blank, is a device that is used together with a blank for safety reasons, functional reasons, or both. The bolts of most semi-automatic and automatic firearms require blank fire adapters to allow blank ammunition to be cycled. It can also be a safety feature designed to break the plug (wooden or plastic), replacing the bullet in the military blank (with the added bonus that a live separated round will break most of the energy through the BFA, and reducing the range and damage done ) as well as diverting the hot gases from the empty discharge to the side, reducing the risk of injury to the target for point-and-shoot fire.

The design of a hollow launch adapter depends on the intended use. Different designs are used for different gun actions and different user needs. For military use, the BFA is obvious so it can be installed alone. In addition to its role in cycling weapon action, the BFA also prevents fragments from blank rounds (and, in some cases, inadvertently loaded live rounds) from escaping. If the BFA is not installed or has fallen, these fragments can cause injury to bystanders. However, when used in film special effects, the BFA needs to be hidden from casual observation so as not to disturb the illusion of live fire, a feat usually achieved by replacing the barrel, which has a chamber with a reduced diameter significantly ahead.

BFA for recoilless and gas fired firearms is relatively simple. These weapons rely on the high chamber pressure created by the combustion of the propellant to push the breech block back, allowing another round to be loaded and fired. If blank ammunition is used, there is no bullet to seal the barrel and the combustion gases are expelled from the muzzle without creating enough pressure to reload the next round.

The simple BFA for these guns consists of a metal screw plug. The adapter attaches to the muzzle of the firearm and allows the attachment or replacement of the muzzle brake, if present. A method is provided to allow some dust gases to escape. This is adjustable, allowing it to adjust the amount of pressure used to re-fire the next round.

One disadvantage of using BFA in gas fired firearms is the amount of powder residue that can build up in the barrel. Since there is only so much you can remove (compared to the use of live ammunition), and the barrel gets rotten quite quickly. After using the BFA, extra care must be taken to ensure that the barrel is clean to avoid damage to the weapon and injury to the operator due to barrel fouling.

Since blank cartridges produce very little recoil, much less than live ammunition, recoil operating mechanisms are not suitable for use with blank cartridges. BFAs used with recoil firearms typically replace the recoil firearm's locking breech with a simple blowback system that uses a restricted barrel, similar to a gas-operated BFA. Short recoil operated pistols are the type most commonly used by self-defense and the police and are usually retrofitted with a simple barrel replacement; the replaced barrel will not lack the locking lugs used to lock the slide to the frame and will be equipped with an adjustable restrictor to control chamber pressure. On designs with a slanted barrel (again, most modern designs do) there may also be provision for the barrel to be moved back, simulating the opening of the slide - this is listed in -US Patent 5 Visible at , 585, 589.

A notable exception to BFA designs for recoil operated firearms are machine guns based on short recoil designs, such as the German MG 34 and its descendants. These designs use a muzzle booster to power the recoil part, and the BFA of these designs simply replaces the muzzle booster with a blank cartridge that provides more thrust. The M2 heavy machine gun, while not normally using a muzzle booster, can use a similar BFA derived from a muzzle booster. Preview size: 400 × 600 pixels. A Blank Launch Adapter or Blank Launch Accessory (BFA), sometimes called a Blank Adapter or Blank Attachment, is used with blank ammunition. Most automatic firearms require a blank ignition adapter to cycle the blank. It may also be a safety feature designed so that if a live round is accidentally fired, most of the energy is used to shatter the BFA, reducing the range and damage done. The BFA also diverts hot gases from the empty discharge to the side, reducing the risk of injury to the target of the aimed shot.
